The Horseshoe Hat-trick

To the People of “The Shoe”,

If you know me at all, you know how much time I spend at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club (on AND off the clock!) I began playing golf at Horseshoe when I was 8 years old, and I knew from a young age that it was where I was going to work.

I was hired at age 16 as a Special Events Server (who wasn't even old enough to pour a glass of wine). My first 12 hour wedding shift was a big wake up call and certainly introduced me to the long hours of event planning.

From there, I was recruited by the Head Golf Professional to begin my journey with the Golf Department. I worked two years of Outside Member Services with a team of six guys who helped shape me into a quality communicator and collaborative team member. They were also convinced that I made more tip money than them, and I can't say that's a lie.

The next year, I joined the Golf Professionals in the pro shop as the Golf Operations Intern. I could create a long list of important things I learned in this position, but non as important as customer service and member relations. I also got three free polo shirts during the Men's Member Guest Invitational, so that was a big bonus!

Now to 2020. When COVID hit and my Senior year at UW-Madison was cut short, I felt a bit hopeless about finding a job in my near future. When golf was officially allowed to be played, I reached out to Horsehoe Bay in hopes of working “one last summer” (I had been saying that for years) in Door County. The Food and Beverage Manager emailed me back as they had an opening on the Beverage Cart. I saw how much fun my friends had on the bev cart, so I secured the opportunity as fast as I could. And boy, did the job live up to the hype! I had the best team of ladies who helped me keep a positive environment through all of the changes and uncertainty thrown our way. We even took to digital marketing (if that’s what you call making Tik Toks). We are kinda famous (one viral video).

It wasn’t until the last month of the golf season this year that I realized the only department I haven’t worked in at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club is Golf Course Maintenance. Which makes sense, because I’ve never mowed the lawn at my own house, much less at a high end golf course. Nevertheless, with the help of the Golf Course Superindendent, I finially completed my Horseshoe Bay Hat-trick! Golf, Food and Beverage, and even Golf Maintenance.

I feel so lucky to have a management team that believes in me and supports me in every job I take on. They have taught me the true value of being a “Jack of all Trades”, among many other things in life. I have learned so much in my time at Horseshoe and I feel confident I will carry those lessons with me where ever I go next. I can now officially retire from Horseshoe Bay Golf Club.

(Maybe)

All Love,

Megan Growt
